What? UPSR and PMR have been abolished? How come?

I was quite shocked to hear that the education ministry is thinking of abolishing UPSR and also PMR but not SPM. I don't understand the logic behind scrapping both national exams. At this point, I could not come up with reasons for them to do so. WHy do they want to scrap these two exams? Is it because they think that questions are too predictable and many students will be able to score many As? Is it because the education ministry thinks that the both exams are not suitable for the new generation of students?

I have nothing against the ministry for mking a change. On the contrary, I do think that a change is a good thing because it will bring in new ideas and also it will be able to broaden a students' mind. One should be open minded and not hide himself or herself. Instead, one should look up and see the world! A change will be good but we need to have more information into the syllabus. That would be the most important thing to do. If the syllabus is crap, it will not be anywhere useful if they change the system.

I think we should let students decide on what they want to study. Have more options for them to decide. I am sure that there are many courses for students to show themselves. Let students know that being an actor or actress is a good carrier besides the traditional work s a lawyer, doctor or being an engineer. Have faith in our new generation of students.

Some students are good in acting so let them persue their carrier into acting. It will earn them lots of money. Don't destroy their dream.

Update (10/05/2007): Parents have concerns over the abolishment of UPSR and PMR which they felt that it is very necessary for their child's developement.

You have written very well on this issue. I understand why the Government is considering abolishing the two new exams. I feel that they should abolish it right away instead of waiting for so many years to come. Reason being, our examination system is extreamly outdated & only encourages being in a rigid box, memorizing & vomitting at exams & then completely blur! This system must END! Infact, it came from British Malaya System just like the system practised by the University of London! Its NOT a Holistic System of Education, it teaches you only to memorize & memorize & absolutely nothing else! For example, look at the difference of the education system practised at the University of the West of England & many other Universities that have changed from the traditional education system to one that is more holistic & better in quality.

No Government Exams doesn't mean No Exams per say, the exams will be internal & students will be tested on other areas besides their exams which will bring about a better understanding on Education.

I do agree with you. There should be a change but it must be justified as to what sort of changes that it should be. As I have mentioned earlier, there should be a balance in the educational system.
