Well, back then, you can easily secure a copy from www.overclockers.co.uk and also from ebay. Anyway, here is what I have to say after using it for more than a month.
I was really excited after getting a copy of the new operating system and began to install it on my computer. It took a while to install as it has taken up to 1.5GB worth of space from my computer. In fact, I have enabled all the security and functions on the Home Premium edition, thinking that it will do me good. I really want to make sure that I will be able to have a good look at the aero glass function.
I then started using the operating system immediately after installation. These are the points which I like or I don't like:
Pros:
(1) Excellent GUI with aero effect and improved over Windows XP
(2) Startup and Shutdown time has been halfed the time compared to using Windows XP
(3) There are much more sopported drivers compared to Windows XP. This is true as I do not need to insert cds to install all my drivers on my computer. Wondiws Vista has it all...
(4)Networking has become a breeze now as compared to Windows XP. This is because I can now just key in the SSID for wireless internet and the password and it works! No fuss at all and I will be connected in seconds.
Cons:
(1) You do need an up to date computer. I would recommend a system memory of 2GB to see the full effect of aero smoothly. You would also need to have a good graphic card and good prosessor too. You do not want to get bottleneck with not up to date prosessor or even the graphic card. It is also vital to know that hard drive plays an important role too here. Slower hard driver will see that your windows experience points drop terribly.
(2)Althought there are many drivers within Vista itself, there are some hiccups too. For example, my Gforce 7900GS graphics card should support Vista but I can see that games are not running as smooth as running within Windows XP itself. Strange but true. I don't know why. I have tried to install the latest drivers for my graphic card but it is the same. I get choppy images while playing games. Well, I have not increase the graphic levels when I am playing NFS: Carbon on Vista. It is strange. Some said that it is due to Nvidia's problem as they are struggling to come up with a Vista certified driver. I don't know.
(3)Added security is good for Vista but if you would have to do double work to attain the same level of performance, you would want to question why. I do have zone alarm and Lavasoft Ad-ware softwares to sort out my security problems. In using them, I do not have a problem at all particularly in regard to spywares. However, after using Windows Vista for some time, I used Windows Defender to scan my spyware and it did not find any spyware at all. Fine.
I then installed Lavasoft's Ad-ware to scan my computer and guess what? It has detected 600+ spywares within my computer itself!!! Luckily I have that software and deleted all of the spywares. What can you say about Windows Defender then?
(4)It is pricy. I would recommend Vista Home Premium for a start. Forget about Home Basic if you are interested in getting Windows Vista because the whole point of having Vista is the aero effect on your computer. The GUI is spectacular.
Conclusion:
My two cents worth? Wait until Microsoft release the Service pack one of Vista before you get a copy of Vista. Take my word for it.
