Couch Potato

I leading research have shown that couch potatos are not getting anywhere. What am I trying to say is that exercise play a vital role in a person's lifestyle. I have always encourage people to exercise although I do not really exercise a lot. What I would do is to do some simple exercise at home and that is all. Sometimes I would go for swimming and that is all about it. By right, I should be doing more exercise. Anyway, this is what the experts have to say...

Up to a third of cancers could be caused by the victim's lifestyle, according to researchers.

The findings suggest 100,000 cases of the disease could be prevented in Britain each year if people did more exercise, stayed slim and followed a healthy diet.

The scientists behind the research published a detailed guide on what to eat and what to do to reduce the odds of getting the disease.

The team, funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, analysed 7,000 studies to give the most comprehensive report on how risk is affected by an individual's lifestyle.

More than 250,000 people a year in Britain develop cancer. Around 160,000 die from the disease.

Research director Professor Martin Wiseman told Sky News: "Whoever you are, whatever you do, there are things you can do that make your likelihood of getting the commonest cancers much less."

The scientists say the public is sometimes confused by conflicting health messages from different studies.

But by pooling results from so many studies, they hope to give an authoritative assessment of how best to reduce the risk of cancer.

Aaron Howlett radically changed his couch potato lifestyle after his GP warned him that he was heading for an early grave.

He was 25 stone. Now he weighs 15 stone and has become a personal fitness trainer.

He said: "By eating lots of broccoli, carrots and other vegetables, combined with moderate exercise, you can reduce some cancers by up to 40%.

"It's not rocket science. If I can do it, anyone can do it."
