I have read many posts online regarding the unefficient Nokia E71-2 in the United States. Reports of RF and software issues have borg down the superiority of the phone itself. Many people have compared the Nokia E71 to the mighty Nokia E90 and also the Blackberry Bold 9000. Obviously there were divided opinions as to which phone is superior after all among the three.
As to me, the answer would be? Depends...
If you really play with the Nokia E90 for some time, you will find that the unit is bulky, just like the Nokia 9500 at around 230g. If you are not worried about the weight, you might be worried about the battery life. The unit which I had had to be recharge every single night. Why? Typically, I would be listening to the radio or mp3s for around 1 hour and then surf the internet for another hour. I also talk on the phone for around 1 hour. By the time I come home after a day's work, I would have to put it on charge. Many people think that it is reasonable because it has been used intensively. What to do? I also use it for GPS navigation some times and it consumes a lot of power at this moment.
Besides these two disadvantages, I have to say that the Nokia E90 is the best of the three. Why? Applications would run smoothly and hardly crashed (I think it is due to the excellent cpu which runs the machine); browser would start up beautifully and without any clitch at all. Reception is perfect and nothing would be able to stop the mighty Nokia E90 from standing out. Oh yes, you can not find the Nokia E90 in China still... Hahahahaha
What about the Blackberry Bold then? As you know, Vodafone UK has been really kind to allow me to use it for a certain period of time when I said that I need to carry out some test regarding the machine. The unit is slightly larger than the Nokia E71 and way much smaller than the Nokia E90. The Blackberry OS runs smoothly but I can't really install much applications on it, unlike the Symbian OS. Battery standby time is on the average of two days for the Blackberry Bold 9000. I can't really say much about the Blackberry Bold 9000 because there is nothing to report about. It can't install much applications, the mp3 player is not as good as the Nokia E90 and certainly watching movies (after converting them) is a breeze on the Blackberry as the CPU is marvellous. I do like the spacing on the keyboard because it does not cram your fingers. The downfall of the Blackberry Bold 9000 is that it is big, not as big as the Nokia E90 but it does not fit your normal average packet. I only had a few system crashes on the Bold 9000 during the one week review so kudos to Blackberry. I really hope that there will be firmware updates for the Bold 9000 as it has many potential to be one of the best smartphones in the market. Oh yes, Vodafone is going to launch the Blackberry Storm 9530 which is specially for Vodafone. Interested? Well, sources tell me that it is much better than the Blackberry Bold but it is a touch screen phone.
Seriously, I would like to give you all a comprehensive review into the Nokia E71 but I think my personal opinion is sufficient. First of all, I was thinking that the Nokia E71 will be able to replace my good old Nokia E90. Can it do so? Well, we will come to it later. Right now, we will start with the phone itself.
The Nokia E71 is stylish and slim. Although the cramp keyboard may be a little bit difficult for big fingers, nevertheless, it is alright because with some exercise, you will get to it. No problem at all. The unit is also small in size and it weights at around 120g. Wow, it is around half the weight of the Nokia E90! You do get the same generator for the Nokia E71 as it takes the BP-4L battery, rated at 1500 mAh from the E90. Impressive?
Applications will run smoothly but the cpu seems to take a toll when you try to open many applications and run all of them together. The phone would freeze and nothing which you can do except to remove the battery and then replace the battery before rebooting the phone. It happened to me for my first three Nokia E71. I don't know what is wrong with the unit but I was told that the fault partly because of Nokia and also partly because of Vodafone.
Anyhow, I do believe that with the same source of energy from the E90 would make the Nokia E71 good, right? Correct! From using the Nokia E71, I have always switch it on dual mode and it is on 3G most of the time. I have fring switched on all the time and sometimes I would surf the internet and listening to mp3s. On a typical day, it will last me two days! Wow, that is a difference between the Nokia E90 and then Nokia E71. I love it! So far, with my fourth unit in hand, it has not cause me any trouble at all. For those people who has business in mind and thinking of finding an alternative device besides HTC and Blackberry, I think the Nokia e71 is a serious contender of them. I like it and will be looking forward to seeing the Nokia E72! Well, I am all for QWERTY keyboard phones!!! Well, it must be a Nokia, though!!!
