KUALA LUMPUR: The death of a six-year-old boy from Hong Kong on Jan 31, while on transit at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Penang, was due to septicaemic shock, secondary to Streptococcal infection, according to clinical and laboratory findings, as well as the post-mortem results.
This is a rare illness most common among children aged five to 15 that causes fever, throat infection, rashes, and complications to the kidney and heart.
Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, in a statement yesterday, said there was no risk of infection from the disease.
“With this clarification, it is hoped there will be no confusion among the public and airline passengers,” he said.
The boy arrived in Malaysia via KLIA on Jan 25 for a vacation with his mother and uncle.
According to the mother, three days prior to arriving here, her child had a fever and was treated by their family physician in Hong Kong.
Upon arrival in Malaysia, the boy was well until Jan 28, when he started to develop rashes but since his condition was stable, his family did not seek medical treatment and continued their vacation.
While in Penang on Jan 29, the boy’s mother realised that he was having severe pain in his left knee after having suffered a fall while in Kuala Lumpur. A private practitioner gave symptomatic treatment and the attending doctor did not suspect anything serious.
On Jan 31, the day they were to return to Hong Kong, the mother realised that the rashes had spread and the boy looked sick but they proceeded with their journey home without seeking medical treatment.
However, during transit in KLIA, the child was taken to a private clinic at the airport for treatment. However, he developed seizures and was pronounced dead at 11.37pm. — Bernama
