Is Dell following HP?

I have wondered about Dell's position as the best pc and notebook manufacturer of all times. At this moment, it seems that Dell is having a tough time. In fact, it seems to me that they are going to stop customisation of their pcs and notebooks to consumers. What is left is factory fitted kit, just like HP, Asus and other manufacturers. Will consumers buy them?

Dell has been the frontrunner of customised pcs and notebooks for many years. In fact, they are the only reasonably priced company who would be able to offer such a service. Look around and you will see that other companies could not even compete with Dell. Well, Alienware and Voodoo tried to follow Dell but what happened? Alienware was bought over by Dell while Voodoo was bought over by HP. HP does not offer customisation of their products anyway. I don't buy HP products now days because I have no options to choose what I want. Only Dell can offer such a good price for customers.

People can say that MESH is also offering the same type of service which Dell can offer but think about it again, are those prices reasonably enough to match those offered by Dell? I don't think so. I think what is happening is that Dell wants to keep their profit margin at the higher scale and thus, had to cut down on expenses. They have outsource their sales and customer service support to India and their components are being assembled in various countries. If you are going to purchase a Dell pc or notebook in the UK or in various countries, the product will be assembled locally so that it will cut cost.

I hope that Dell will not follow other notebook and pc manufacturers by selling stock factory version. I will not buy from Dell if they do that because I want to customise my notebook with warranty attached. So far, besides Dell, MESH will be able to come close to what Dell can offer but their prices are quite high and their warranty is questionable particularly if you always travel. They do not have a local repair shop where by they can fix it for you if you need their service.
