Free Wifi in Penang

According to this report, Penang will start rolling out free Wi-fi. Now, there will be people who will support the motion and also some of them will oppose such a move. Let me start off with those people who will support the motion.

For those people who support the motion will be mostly teenagers and also those technological geeks who are very much into the internet era. People like me who likes wi-fi will be a plus point to stay and remain in Penang as you don't need to pay for internet anymore. I am sure that the Penang government would have to spend some money in getting those Wi-fi towers up and to pay for such services. I do thank Lim Guan Eng and his team for making Penang as one of the very first State in the country to realise the dream of having free internet.

Well, when I said free internet, it does not mean free at all. First of you, you would need a wi-fi enabled computer or laptop to run. That cost money, right? For starters, I don't think it will be a problem because we have to pay a substantial amount of money for surfing the internet, right? If it is free for all, chances will see that the whole nation will benefit from it so long as your PDA/smartphones have wi fi enabled.

The second thing is that mobile phone sellers will have more businessnes now as they will be able to sell more high end mobile phones as only those equipped with high end models will have wi-fi enabled. The second group of people who will support free wi-fi will be schools and other business organisations. This is because now they don't need to pay for corporate rates in getting such service. Do you think it is worth while then? I think so.

As for those who oppose the free wi-fi access to all Penangtis, there will be parents who have growing up children to be away from those wi-fi towers. I can understand what are they trying to prove. It is actually quite bad for the development of a child's brain. That is why scientists have stated that it is bad to stay within the range of the electrical powerline, right? Didn't they say it before? It is also bad for people who stay within close range of a radio telecommunication tower. Radiowaves which emittes from those towers are bad. However, if you don't stay within very close range of the radio telecommunication tower, you will be just fine.

The second group of people who will oppose such a motion to have free wi-fi for all will be the telcos themselves. Right now, if the Penang government were to buy the service from TM alone, it makes companies like Celcom and Maxis to have less customers. This is because they have roll out their wireless broadband service. If Penangtis were to have free wireless internet connection, will people buy such services from them? Think about it. They will have less profits, right?

I am not sure about how the Penang government is going to work it out but I think they will do a fine job. This is because I have faith in Lim Guan Eng and his team, should I say...PKR? Look on the bright side...You Penangtis have free wi-fi!!!
