PhD

I am quite shocked to see most jobs will require applicants to have at least a PhD. This is quite shocking because it is not easy to obtain a PhD in nature. One would have to ensure that he/she has sufficient funds to last for the entire duration of his/her course (usually a full time PhD will take around 3 years while a part time PhD will take around 4-7 years).

Apart from having sufficient funds, it is also required that the PhD student is mentally capable to do the same research for the entire duration. This is an achievement which is very difficult to realise. However, never say never because if you have a will to proceed with the course, naturally there will be a way to complete the course.

Naturally timing is very important to complete a PhD. Ideally it will be much better if the PhD student were to have sufficient moral support throughout his/her studies as there will be no shortcut to achieving such a feast.

Personally, I am a big fan of someone doing a PhD. However, one could argue that there are more than just one route to obtain a PhD. You could do a research to obtain your PhD or you could also publish articles before applying for your PhD.

Having a 'Dr.' before your name is a privilege and I hope that I will be able to achieve it.

Wish me luck...

Where is the Love, my Friends???!!!

I am just quite sad to see that there are people who can get jealous easily and turn against you. It is quite frightening as one day he/she could be your friend and the next, he/she will be your enemy. What is this world turning into?

Frankly, I have not being jealous of anyone. It does not really matter if anyone is better than me. I have no issues with that. I would be really sad as I take everyone is my friend and would that be the way to treat a friend by being jealous?

Jealous is a big word as it may lead to disaster. I would now lay low for a while as I do not want to involve myself in anything else. It is just so strange. Just because I'm good in PR and in my work, it does not mean that they should get jealous of me. That is just so sad... I hope that I'm wrong...

Being Nice to other People

I just don't know why but it is really hard to be nice to everyone whom you know. The thing is that if you are always nice to other people, some people might not appreciate you but take you for granted... What to do with them then?

Samsung Galaxy Tab

From the very first moment that I have noticed this beauty, I could not stop myself from admiring the sheer functions that is embedded in the device itself. I don't like to draw comparisons but I just could not help myself from doing it anyway. The new tablet from Samsung which is called the Galaxy Tab does have something to shout about. It puts designers and engineers at Apple to shame. Do you know why? Samsung could manage radio capabilities with two cameras but you can't have those on the IPad. Sad, isn't it?

Well, for Samsung, it is an achievement! They have managed to cram a few more things inside the Galaxy Tab than competitors. A good example will be the fact that you have a removable 4400mAH battery which will last you around 7 hours with one charge if it is being used sensibly. Another thing is that it comes with a 7" screen and so it is easily tucked away in your bag. It has an internal storage of up to 16GB with the option of installing more memory via external memory card of up to a maximum of 32GB.

The Galaxy Tab has Bluetooth and wireless capabilities. The best of all is that it runs on the Android Froyo 2.2 OS!!! That is just brilliant as one can use the Galaxy Tab as a wireless hub!!! It works on my Google Nexus One though. I am just waiting for it to be launched in the UK!!!

However, I do have reservations about the new device though. It is more expensive than the IPad. At a price of £699 for the 16GB model, i think I would most probably get the 64GB version of the IPad instead of the Galaxy Tab. Well, it is nothing personal but it is all down to preference. If you like the 10" tablet from Apple with Mac OSX, you will not give the IPad a miss. Other than that, the Galaxy Tab will be better suited for you.

Update:

07/09/2010: According to internet sources, the 16GB version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will not cost £699 but around US$299. I wonder if the price is after carrier subsidising or not...

Human Behaviour

I have come across many people throughout my service in the private sector. One thing I have learned is that there are always a reason for a person's behaviour in their own special way. I am not criticising them but I would like to share something with you all.

Not too long ago, I have come across a customer who does not trust anyone but himself. He was quite straight to the point and he does not trust anyone. He will refuse to do any business with anyone unless they have a signed contract. Having said that, he would go to the extend of having the contract endorsed by a solicitor. Now, do you think what he is doing is just a little bit too much?

From my conversation with him, he does not have much spare cash to run his business. I don't think that is relevant to his behaviour though. I think it is good to have a signed contract but he is not flexible. I have asked him before the reason why he was behaving like that and he simply gave me an answer: "I'm fed up with those people who tried to cheat me".

I don't blame that guy for behaving like that. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. He is not flexible because he does not trust anyone but himself. The question is how am I going to get his trust then? Simple - Just do as he says. After all, he is the customer, am I right? Well, not entirely so. We can't just bend rules just because of one or two customers. This is just wrong. As we are living in a society, we have rules to follow and we can't just start bending those rules to suite one or two people. What would other people think about it when they come to their knowledge of what had happend then? Do you think that it is fair?

Companies have their own rules and having a signed contract is not a problem because it is the usual method of doing a business. However, I think it is an overkill when a customer wants an endorsement from a solicitor! I don't mind having the endorsement done but the customer will have to pay for the solicitor's fees. If the customer refused to do so, I think we would try to negotiate and if it is not working, we might have to do a 50-50 split on solicitor's fees.

Being "fair" have nothing to do with a person's behaviour. Once a person's mind is set on a particular way, there would be difficulties in getting them to think rationally. I could give you an example. I came across a person who had family problems and he could not concentrate in whatever he was doing. In the end, he was failing in his work and he needed help. He did not ask for help because he was a little bit too proud of himself and he thinks that he does not need any help until his superiors demand for him to seek counselling or risk losing his job.

People might feel insecure about themselves or being afraid to talk to someone because they are scared that their secrets will be known to someone else and they will risk being able to get a better job next time. I think it is quite foolish to think like that.

We humans are just humans so we need help when we need it. It is perfectly alright to seek help. Employers should be more open minded when dealing with people who previously had some problems in the past which affected their level of service to the public or to the company which they were working in.  Think objectively and I am sure that it should be fine.

Last but not least, we need to shower people with love, not hate or selfishness. We need to be more open minded and trust other people. Be flexible and try to dish out those bad habits. We need to be more positive as we need to filter out bad behaviour. Trust in ourselves and Trust in the Lord.

Black Holes

Ever since I was young, I was impressed by how our universe was formed. I was paying too much attention to the creation of the universe and how stars were born and died. It was not until recently that I was doing a research into the importance of dark matter where I stumbled upon a few research of Black Holes.

I have always been told that Black Holes are evil. They are bad in the way that they suck everything into it, not even light could run from it. The formation of a Black Hole is not hard to explain. A Black Hole could be formed during a gigantic star's death where gravity was so great that when it dies, a Black Hole was formed. There could be a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) anywhere. In fact, there is a Super Massive Black Hole in the centre of our galaxy - The Milky Way. I am scared.

The theory is that when one encouters a Black Hole, it could be a portal to another sector of the universe. If that is true, how come you have quesars which shoots out across the universe like a big jet stream? There is a theory that in the hard of a Black Hole, there is a singularity where time is infinite. Some people have mentioned that it will be good to send in a probe to see whether it is possible to go through a Black Hole and survive as it might be a wormhole attached to the Black Hole itself. I think it is just too science fiction though but I am open to suggestions.

Perhaps we will be able to use the technology of a Black Hole to do some time travel, just like Doctor Who (The Timelord) to get back in time or to go forward to the future to ensure that life will be much better for everyone. Well, it is not really a good idea because in doing so, the timeline will not be natural anymore. Stick to the timeline!!!

It is just scary to know that there is a Super Massive Black Hole in the centre of our galaxy. Well, maybe it is just the way how it is...

Can You Handle This?

I have been quite unhappy with some individuals who tried their ways to show off their powers to me and also to everyone. I have analysed the reasons why some people will want to show off what they have even though people know that they are not up to scratch.

  • They felt threatened as if you are going to take over their work;
  • They felt the need to show people who is still in charge ( even though they are not good at their work);
  • They are jealous that you are more popular than them;
  • They want to make you very small as they want to be-little you;
  • They want to improve their level of confidence.
I think these people should reflect on themselves. They should look at themselves before pointing fingers on other people.

Attachement

(a) Importance of attachment

Humans tend to get attached to someone throughout their life irrespective of whether it is a physical attachment or a mental attachement. It is a natural phenomenal as it is a circle of life. This discussion will be looking into the importance of attachement and the issues surrounding it. The very first question to ask is 'why are we looking forward into an attachement'?

One of the many reasons as to the importance of an attachment has everything to do with the different kinds of relationship between two individuals and both physical and biological needs of a person. One good example which we will be looking into is the behaviour of a child. Quite often than not, a child will rely on his/her parents in providing sufficient clothings, food, education and the love to him. Quite frankly, it is the very first place where a child will ever learn to love!

A child will neceessary need the physical attachment to his/her parents.  This is often said as a reliance on the child towards the parents because it is the crux of the development of a child's behaviour. If the parents can allocate sufficient time to teach their children, the children will be able to be independent at an earlier stage. That is where we have to look into a person's upbringing.

(b) Upbringing

When a child relies on his/her parents, naturally, there will be some sort of bonding between the child and his/her parents. What happenes next will be the fact that every single event will be registered by the child either directly or subconsciously in the mind of the child. Let's look into an example of James.

James is a 21 year old student and he is curently being enroled in a university which is around 300 miles away from his parents' house. It is assumed that he is staying with his parents at the moment. James' character will greatly depend on how he was being brought up. If he has received lots of love and affection from his parents as a whole, it is natural that he might be uncomfortable in being far away from his parent's house especially if he has to study in a university which is so far away from home. The least which he can do is to go home as much as he could to see his parents.

James might feel lost for the first time without his parents when he is about to start his course in a university which is so far away from home. He could not possibly go back home after classes. He has to move to an accommodation nearby so that it will be easier for him to travel between the university and his house. It might be very difficult for him to get ajusted to the new enviornment especially it is his first time staying away from his parents. He has to realise that he could not see his parents everyday and he could not receive the same level of attention from his parents since he is now staying quite far away from his parent's house. The good news is that he will be able to make more friends in the university!

At this moment in time, it is the best way to judge whether James comes from a good home or from a broken family. Naturally, if someone were to be from a good family background, the child will be more attentive during class or he/she will behave well irrespective of whether it is in the university or out of the university. What James is going through might be difficult for him. He is now outside his comfort zone and how is he going to fall back on? He will have to fall back on his behaviour. If he has a good upbringing, there is a tendency that he will be bahaving goodly. If he comes from a bad upbringing, there is a tendency that he will be violent or bahaving badly towards another.

Having said that, it is just the general thing. There are those people who are the exceptions to the general rule. There are those people who coms from a broken home but yet they trive and they learned the hard way. A child would always get attached to their parents if they are the one who guide the child through thick and thin. A child needs love and warmth. If they can't get it from the parents, they will get it from other people like their friends. Naturally they will want to get attached to someone in their course of life. It would be down to whether it is a good attachment or a bad attachment.

(c) Good or bad attachment

Can a person change due to the enviornment? The answer is 'depends'. Generally, an enviornment will change a person's perspective. Just imagine James,  a university who has never left home, had to coup up with the level of stress of being alone. How could he take it alone without any help? That is why it is important that lecturers and tutors of the university should provide adequate support for students especially for those year one students.

There are times when a person is lonely, he or she will try to make more friends to take away the loneliness which builds up around the individual. This is where the good or bad attachment will appear. University students might not have a clue of whether they are mixing with a group of good friends or friends who are meant to destroy them in the end. A good student support officer should have his or her eyes and ears wide open. This is important as he or she might need to provide counselling services to an individual.

When this happens, most of the time, the individual student will most of the time, get attached to the individual staff. The university support officer can merely provide advice but he or she could not do anything which is over the limit or stepping across the boundary of being a suppor tutor or being a personal tutor.

There are many ways in which a student support officer or personal tutor could be widely 'advertised'. One good example will be the holding of many events such as open days and induction weeks should help students to settle down in their new enviornment. If not, there are student support officers to help them.

(d) Student's Need

As part of a big organisation, it is really hard for a student support office to handle too many students. The normal complaints will be them handling too many students with too little time to spare. When a student is in need of help, the very first person whom they will look for will be their mentor, support tutor or even their best friends. If a student support tutor gets too attached to a student or a few students, it is very difficult for the individual to accept another person due to the fact that they have put a lot of their faith and trust onto the same individual.  Where is the boundary of the mentor or student support officer then?

(d)(i) How Do We Help Students?

How would a student support officer or a mentor help a student? In answering the first question of how would a support officer help a student, it is relatively straight forward. The university has been very supportive in providing ample guidance for each and every student to feel comfortable while they are studying in the university.

There are many ways in which we can help a student. Often than not, a personal one to one meeting will always be welcomed by the student.  Besides a one to one meeting with the student, it is possible to arrange for a group meeting so that students could come together and have a good laugh. Besides this, the university could arrange for activities within the faculty to improve the relationship between a student and staff.

(d)(ii) When Do We Help Students?

The first sign which will give way to a support tutor that a student is in need of help could arise from the way how the individual student behave. It is clear that there are bound to be some students who are shy and they are not keen to mix with other students in the class.  In such a case, the class tutor or lecturer should get in touch with the student's support tutor and try to arrange for a meeting between the student's support tutor and the student. It is wise to start addressing the problem at the very beginning of the term and not wait until the very last minute.

(e) Conclusion

A student's attachment to his or her lecturer or tutor is quite common now days. It is a beauty if the individual tutor or lecturer could be friendly but try to keep the boundaries. What is important is that we have to ensure that students will not fall behind with their studies. University life is meant to be fun and not dull!

Roxette

Have you heard of a swedish rock group called 'Roxette'? They were really popular during the 1980s to the late 1990s. I am so happy that they are back in action!!! Evidently, one could see that they are back in top form performing The Look. Their song 'It must have been love' has been adapted into the movie called 'Pretty Woman'. Enyjoy their songs! I do...I hope you too...

Second Airbus Crash

Remember the Air France tragedy on 1 June 2009? It involved an Airbus A330-200. Yesterday, we have a second Airbus crash over the Indian Ocean. That is pretty bad though as over 150 passengers have died.

I am really sad... First, we have the Air France crash, then we have the death of one of the original Charlie's Angels (Farrah Fawcett) at the age of 62. After that we have the shocking death of the King of Pop - Michael Jackson. He died at the age of 50. It is really shocking and now...We have the death of 150 passenger from the Yemeni's Airways...This is terrible!!! I am so shocked!!!

Oh God, where are you when you are deeply appreciated and needed?
